Soul Eater – Episode 9

Soul EaterWhile Soul recovers, Maka has a heart-to-heart with her father, while BlackStar and Kid go looking for the legendary weapon Excalibur.

While Soul recovers, Maka’s spirits are down, and Death Scyth, sensing his daughter’s vulnerability tries to act more like a father by asking her if she wants to talk, where the two proceed to the roof.

Meanwhile Sid has ordered BlackStar to do more maintenance work, and this time without Tsubaki: he must clear up and reshelve the hundreds of stray books around the library.  Before he’s even got started, BlackStar is interrupted by Death the Kid, who wants to look at one of the books he’s sitting on.  Kid pulls out the book Excalibur (which BlackStar can barely pronounce) and explains to his inquisitive friend that it’s a book about the legendary weapon Excalibur, which is said to be the most powerful weapon in existence (with a Sword in the Stone type mythology surrounding it), and when Stein confirms that the Excalibur sword really does exist.  On that word, BlackStar forgets his maintenance work and ventures with Kid to find the sword.

The two follow the book’s directions to a mysterious cave where a fairy meets them.  When she asks them why they’ve come here and they reply and the fairy pulls an unhappy face, but the two ignore the fairy and proceed.  They enter a cavern where the sword is shrouded in bright light, and while Kid admires it’s symmetry, BlackStar is able to yank the sword out of the ground with ease.  Angry that BlackStar’s beaten him to the mark, Kid demands that he puts it back, and then is able to pull the sword out himself.  Excited that they’ve both been proved worthy, the booming voice of Excalibur announces himself…

…and a small white man wearing a suit-jacket and a top-hat appears.  Excited that he will bestow his weapons power on him, Kid and BlackStar wait patiently, until he tells them there is a list of a thousand things they must adhere to, including his 8 hour story time.

Back at Shibusen, Tsubaki has cleaned up the library Stein explains that the problem with the legendryweapon is not that no one is worthy for the sword, or nor that no one can attune their soul to it, but that no one wants to be it’s master because his ego’s bigger than BlackStarhe’s bossy and relentless – meaning no one wants to attune their soul to his.

Back in the cavern, BlackStar and Kid make a joint decision about Excalibur’s power, and swiftly place the weapon back in the ground where they found it and make a quick fairy, and pull the same unhappy face as the fairy did to them when they see her on the way out.

Meanwhile, Maka’s conversation with her father hasn’t gone too well when she ambushes him with questions about her mother and his string of affairs.  However the conversation soon deviates back to Soul’s position and Death Scyth discloses that Soul has become infected with black blood.

The following day at Shibusen, BlackStar and Kid cross paths while with their respective weapons, and both comment that they already have excellent weapons.

The Verdict

This is yet another episode which had me in stitches, and also goes to show that the male characters are coming off far stronger, character-wise, than the female, although as I’m writing this post seeing future episodes, I know that there is more to come from them.

This episode is obviously put here to relieve some of the tension from the previous episode, and also so that we don’t forget who Kid and BlackStar are.  The great thing about this series is that there’s not any unnecessary tension between the characters, and everyone seems pretty friendly and willing to team up, rather than crying that a cohort is stronger than them or that their crush fancies him.  A word I overuse, but it’s refreshing!  Roll on next episode!
