Koizora – Episode 4

koizoraHiro comes to terms with his illness and realises he’ll have to sacrifice his relationship to protect Mika.

Hiro asks his father about his chances with the illness, and although he doesn’t give a clear answer, Hiro realises that things aren’t good for him, and he might not make it to his 20th Birthday.  Upset, Hiro realises that he no longer can protect Mika.

On his birthday, Mika is stood up by Hiro, but tracks him down by the stream.  She gives him his birthday present, which he tells her is horrible, and throws in the stream before storming off.  Relentless, Mika buys Hiro another hat and waits outside his house until late, but Minako covers for Hiro, who is upstairs in his bedroom and tells Mika that he’s not in.

Returning home, tired and exhausted, Mika isn’t sure what to think about Hiro’s behaviour.  At school a few days later, Nozomu and Aya invite Mika to a party at Hiro’s house when they find out she didn’t know about it in the first place.  Nozumo, slightly confused by Hiro, confronts him on the school roof about his coldness towards Mika.  Hiro asks Nozomu if he can do him a favour.

When Mika arrives at the party, a load of strange girls have appeared along with Hiro, Aya and Nozomu.  Although Hiro acts friendly at first toward Mika, he soon turns slightly cold again.  Later that night, Nozomu forces a kiss on Mika, and she runs out of Hiro’s room to wash her face.  Upon returning she find Hiro kissing another girl.  Heartbroken, Mika gets her things and runs home in the dark.

The following day at school, Mika and Hiro meet in the reading room where Hiro slams Mika for kissing Nozomu, despite Mika pointing out that he too was kissing someone else.  Enraged by his behaviour, Mika takes off her ring and throws it at him, but later reconsiders ending the relationship, and sends a message to Hiro to meet her in the reading room after school.  Hiro fails to arrive, but Mika is relentless in her pursuit and messages him again to meet her by the stream tomorrow – if he doesn’t show up, Mika will give up on him.  Mika waits at the stream the next day, and Hiro arrives, only to reiterate that it’s over.  Heartbroken, Mika skips school.

When she arrives home, her father asks why she didn’t go to school, and she replies that her and Hiro have broken up.  Angry that the man he trusted has dumped his daughter for no reason, Mika’s father calls Hiro to meet him, but not finding the answers he wants from Hiro, he punches him to the ground and states that Hiro wasn’t the man he thought he was and that he’s mislaid his trust.

Mika slowly comes to terms with the end of her relationship with Hiro, and decides to take down her photos and try and repress her memories.  The following Christmas Eve, Aya hosts a party to try and introduce Mika to some new men.  However, unbeknown to Aya, the day is the anniversary of Mika and Hiro’s daughter’s death, and Mika can’t help but let her mind drift.  Another of Aya’s friends arrives, a second year uni student, Yuu.  Yuu is charming, but notices Mika’s lack of integration.  While the others play a game where the looser has to confess to a member of the opposite sex, Yuu asks Mika how she’d like a man to propose to her.  Mika replies that she’d like the man to give her a punch of babies breath and tell her he loved her, but then feels uncomfortable and leaves the party alone, despite Yuu offering to give her a lift to where she needs to go.

Mika goes to the grave of their daughter and finds Hiro there, although he acts as if he were there by coincidence and not to see their child.  After he leaves, Mika notices a small snowman on their daughters grave, and tries to follow Hiro realising he hasn’t let go of the past.  However the road splits and she can’t find him. Instead she find Yuu, waiting with his car to take Mika home.  Despite her crying, he doesn’t ask her what she was doing, and hands her a blanket instead.  Mika sees this as a sign from her daughter to try and move on and be happy.

In the new year, Mika is being tutored by Yuu so that she can enter university, and despite Aya’s speculation, she isn’t dating him.  Nozomu tells Hiro who is now frequently in and out of hospital due to his illness that Mika is aiming for university and studying every night in the library.  Happy that Mika is happy, Hiro goes to the library to see her, but is upset when he notices Yuu there, especially when he ruffles Mika’s hair in the same way Hiro used to.

Yuu takes Mika to the beach after studying, and presents her with a bunch of babies breath.  Mika apprehensively asks Yuu why he never asked her where she went on Christmas Eve, but his assumes she went to see an old flame.  Mika describes Hiro to Yuu as a stream that engulfs everything, but eventually passed her, but Yuu replies that he is the ocean, and will keep engulfing everything.  Mika accepts the flowers, but her relationship with Yuu is unclear.

Back at home, Mika’s father is trying to sell their family home to raise funds for his business.  Mika’s mother is refusing to accept this which has resulted in the two wanting to divorce.  Mika is distraught and runs to see Yuu, in tears, and accidental falls asleep at his apartment.  The next day the two return together to Mika’s house, and find that all their family photos are cut up.  Yuu grabs some sellotape and tapes all the photos back together, before confronting Mika’s parents together and telling them how Mika feels.  Mika also expresses her feelings that she doesn’t care if they all live apart, but she doesn’t want divorce and for her family to end.  Mika’s parents see the strong feelings of their daughter, and agree to make up.  Mika hugs Yuu and thanks him for his help, and the couple start to date.

During the summer at a fireworks festival, Nozomu sees Yuu and Mika together, and rushes off to tell Hiro.  Hiro cries, but is happy that Mika is now happy, and Nozomu asks if he should tell her about Hiro’s illness.  Hiro refuses still, despite his pain and sadness.
