Last year, the name of Morning Musume’s Spring concert tour “Michishige SOUL11″ sparked speculation that Sayumi Michishige would be the next Morning Musume graduate. Shortly after, it was announced that the other 6th Generation member Reina Tanaka would be graduating instead.
Hello! Project producer tsunku loves trolling us all – but his latest announcement has shocked everyone. After annoucing the search for the “Mirai Shoujo” of Morning Musume, to which 5,600 girls applied, tsunku has now announced that no one has passed, as well as giving us a few other interesting morsels:
- Morning Musume currently has it’s strongest lineup;
- If the 12th gen applicants had applied at the time of the 9th gen auditions, they would have won and
- No one of the 12th gen applicants is strong enough to join Momusu.
tsunku’s confidence is Momusu is amazing, but many old school Momusu fans don’t agree. Vocally, Momusu are at one of their weajest points and have relied heavily on autotuned, electro-pop singles to mask this.
tsunku’s point about the 9th gen seems a little… insulting. Although he mentions the 9th gen’s improvement, it begs to question whether they will be first to go once the graduations kick in.
I’m a big Platinum era fan, but a grievous error was made during this time. tsunku took too long to insert new girls into the group, leaving Morning Musume vocally weak and now heavily dependent on Ayumi and Riho’s dancing abilities. The current line up need to develop their singing ability.
I agree that Morning Musume didn’t need new members, but why was everyone’s time wasted in the first place with the auditions?
S/mileage seem to be the latest act getting the preferential treatment from Hello! Project. In a similar way that Erina Mano was shoved in our faces at every available concert in late 2008/early 2009, S/mileage have also been forced quite heavily on us, despite their only original material being four indie singles. As much as I am quite indifferent towards them at the moment, as they don’t seem to be bring anything new to Hello! Project, I’m sure by the end of this year they will have brain washed me in a smilar way to how ManoEri has.
The latest news is that Morning Musume member Reina Tanaka is leaving her spot on the FIVE STARS radio show to S/mileage members Yuka Meada and Kannon Fukada starting next week. Although FIVE STARS is a rotating radio show, the news did seem to come pretty abruptly. The INTERFM website is yet to divulge us much more information, but as far as I can tell, Gaki and Eri are still on their Monday slot with C-ute on Tuesday.
Although I only occasionally read the transcripts of FIVE STARS, it does seem a shame for one of the most popular members of the current Hello! Project line up to be pushed aside for S/mileage – but that’s how Hello! Project works. It means S/mileage will have a great excuse to play their new singles on air when they make their debut, but it also means less airtime for Morning Musume.
Although Reina still has her animated series (Kaito Reinya), it’s not a reflection of the real “Reina” who we gain so much juicy fan information from on radio shows and live tours (don’t forget, she’s my favourite Momusu, of course I’m going to be outraged with her getting sidelined from anything!). Maybe she’ll get a new radio show, or follow Sayumi footsteps in opening up a blog, or maybe she’s busy with other plans. Either way, the sudden shift from the norm is always a little worrying for a Hello! Project fan as it instantly strikes up fears of graduation, scandal or even worse – a solo career under tsunku.
For more info about this check out Hello! Sayunii which is far more informative and impartial than a Reina fan such as myself.
Once again I’ve taken part in Hello Blog’s poll which outlines H!P popularity. This year it was a ranking of all the girls in H!P before April 1st – so the elder club was included.
Once again I acted on impulse, thinking (wrongly or rightly) to rank the girls I liked right at this very moment, and this is what it has resulted in – a mish-mash of Morning Musume past and present members and… Yuu Kikkawa (?). No Melons, Berryz or C-ute more notably, despite the fact I like them, I’ve never seen their personalities as much as the MM girls, so here I’ll make my justifications!
Finally, the longest unchanged line-up in Morning Musume’s history have released an original album! Not only does this album contain a staggering 5 singles but also three solo songs from, well, unlikely members.
- Resonant Blue
- Ame no Furanai Hoshi de wa Aisenai Darou?
- Take off is now! (Takahashi / Niigaki / Tanaka)
- Nai Chau Kamo
- Watashi no Miryoku ni Kizukanai Donkan na Hito (Mitsui)
- Guru Guru Jump (Kusumi / Jun Jun / Lin Lin)
- Jounetsu no Kiss wo Hitotsu (Takahashi / Niigaki / Tanaka)
- It’s You (Michishige)
- Onna ni Sachi Are
- Kataomoi no Owari ni (Kamei)
- Kanashimi Twilight
Can Morning Musume break the downward spiral that Hello! Project seem to have set themselves in lately? Or is this just another cover album that doesn’t twist the original songs enough to justify itself?
